A printer is a peripheral which produces a representation of an electronic document on physical media such as paper or transparency film.
Types of Printers
1 Inkjet Printers are designed for home users, students and anyone who is not so concerned about the highest quality of print outs. They work by Inkjet shooting tiny sprays of heated or electronically charged ink through microscopic holes in a print head onto the page, one row at a time The nozzles are positioned with very high precision to provide high quality output. These printers can be black and white or they can be colored printers. They are connected via a USB port or can be connected by Wi-Fi. They are slower than a laser printer and have a lower DPI (Resolution) but they are cheaper than laser printer making them affordable.
2)Laser Printers have a higher resolution and are generally used in an office environment or by people who work with a lot of graphics and need that printed. Whilst these printers are more expensive they offer a higher print quality and are faster at printing. Laser printer uses laser beam for the purpose of printing, it produces high precision output at high speed. They function on the principle of static Electricity.
Basic Terminology
1) NLQ i e. near letter quality: When the cartridge has multiple passes over the paper there is a higher dot density. This is how the printer increases its effective resolution. This is a standard feature in printer. Higher the NLQ smother the letters.
2) PPM ie. Pages Per Minute: it is used to describe the capacity of the printer i.e. how many prints per minute can the printer print (standard size paper).
Laser printer* PPM (Depending on Brand) black and white printer.
12 to15 pages/min, 17to22 pages/min, 18to25 pages/min.
3) Duty Cycle Month- it is used to describe the capacity of the printer on a per month basis i e. how many prints per month can the printer print (standard size paper).
Laser printers Duty cycle (Depending on Brand)- 2,500 5,000 pages month.
Advanced new printers- 6,000 3,00,000 pages/month.
4) DPI- Dots Per Inch: this is the resolution or detailing of the print. The resolution etermines the amount of detail the printer can produce.
Common Features
A) USB Port- Use mass storage device (pen drive) for direct printing without connecting to system.
B) Card Reader Print directly from memory card.
C) Wi Fi Connect to the Wi-Fi network and print wirelessly.
